Valuation of Tenements

In the Parish in 1852

Richard Griffith, Commissioner of Valuations was commissioned to carry out a survey of the holdings of people, in many parts of the country.In 1852 he published a detailed account, giving acreage and valuation of each holding in every townland. His valuation would correspond to our Poor Law Valuation of the present day.

1852 was many years before the Land League and the Land

Purchase Schemes and so the Landlords were still the owners of the land and so could raise rents and evict tenants as they wished. Some of the Landlords in this Parish were rather lenient, but others, especially absentee landlords, who worked through their agents, were harsh and unscrupulous.

One thing we can plainly see is that the names of the landowners in each townland has not changed a great deal during the past century and a half almost. They have changed a little in spelling. Many farms, which included mountain grazing or bogland, were not divided, as is the case today in some places. Griffith surveyed the whole area belonging to a certain group of people and deemed it as Commonage but laid down the amount or ‘stint’ or ‘Colp’ each individual was entitled to have on the common land and in some cases the owner had to herd his cattle and keep them from straying too far.
