Simple Irish Expressions.

Salutations

“Dia Dhuit” – Answer: “Dia is Muire Dhuit”.

When speaking to more than one – “Dia Bhaoibh” – Same answer.

“Dia is Muire dhuit” – Answer: “Dia is Muire dhuit is Padraig”.

“Bail o Dhia ar an obair”, Answer: “Dia is Muire dhuit” or “An Bhail ceanna ort”.

When entering a house, the one in the house says:

“De bheatha cuain”, Answer: “Gor mairir I bhfad”.

If the person entering speaks first, he says:

“Bail o Dhia anseo isteach”, Answer: “De bheatha sa cuaim”.

When leaving a house a person says: “Slan agat”, Answer:

“Slan leat is go leiri do bhothar leat”.

When a person gives you something say: “go raibh maith agat”.

If you accidentally push a person say: “Gathaim pardun agat” or “Gaibh mo leathsceal”,

At Christmas say: “Nollaig fe mhaise duit”.

Speaking to a child say: “is maith an garsun no cailin tu, Dia do bheannacadh”.

When you sneeze say: “Dia linn”.

When you hear of an accident say: “I bhfad uainn an t-olc”.

When you hear of a person having an accident through his own fault say: “A conach san air”.

When you notice some one wearing something new say:

“Go maiir is go gcathair é”.

When a friend calls especially not seen for a long time say:

” Fáilte ui cheallaigh romhat”.

If a person does a good deed, such as a good jump say:

“Maith an fear” no Mo ghroidin tú”.

When you congratulate a person say: ” Traosluim leat”.

Or if it is a newly married couple say:

“Sliocht sleachta ar sliocht bhur sleachta” no “is clannclainne ar clainn do clainn”.

 

When you go on a visit make it short as it is said:

“Teir go h-anamh go tig do cara, is bheidh fáilte romhat”.

“Teir go minic is teir gan coinne is bheidh grain ort”.

“Sláine” no “Sláinte mhaith”, good health when taking a drink in company.

“Go raibh mhaith agat” – Thanks.

“Slán mar a n-inntear” – God save us when talking about an accident or something sudden.

“Mo ghoidin thú” or “Mo cheol thú”.

When a person does a good act returning strenght and skill. The opposite of “A chanach san ort”.

“Ní bheidh a leitheid ann aris”.

The likes of him will never again be there.

“Bothar Laoire” – Leary’s deafness – Hearing only what suits him.

“Beidh lá eile ag an bpaorach” – Power will have another day that is when he is ready.

“Níl bun na barr leis” It is purely nonsense.
